Calculation of mode – Continuous series
- Locate the maximum frequency, the corresponding
class is the modal class.
- Determine the value of the mode by applying the
following formula:
Mode = L + [h(f0 - f-1)/(2f0
- f-1 - f+1)]
Where:
L = lower limit of the modal class.
h = class interval of the modal class.
f0 = frequency of the modal class.
f -1 = frequency of the class preceding
the modal class.
f+1 = frequency of the class succeeding
the modal class.
Q. 11. The income of 80 families are given
below: (Dec. 2001)
Income
(in Rs.) |
No. of families
|
4000
- 6000 |
8 |
6000
- 8000 |
24 |
8000
- 10000 |
32 |
10000
- 12000 |
16 |
Find the mode.
Solution. By inspection, the maximum frequency
is 32.
So 8000 - 10000 is the modal class.
L = 8000, h = 2000, f0 = 32, f
-1 = 24, f+1 = 16
Mode = L + [h( f0 - f-1)/(2f0
- f-1 - f+1)]
= 8000 + {2000(32 - 24)/[(2 X 32) - 24 - 16]}
= 8666.67
Hence, the mode income is Rs. 8666.67.
